A few years ago I wrote a story about Houston interior designer Julie Dodson HERE. Julie has a varied client base–for some she creates more contemporary designs and for others she does a classic, French style design. Guess which one I am drawn to?
I can’t help it! I am just attracted to more feminine interiors, filled with antiques and curves as opposed to straight lines. Here is what Julie says about her aesthetic:
“I love to design in the French style, but in fun and fresh ways,” and that is so true!
The fun and fresh ways are what makes her interiors pop and what also attracts young clients to her.
When I last wrote about Julie, she sent pictures of this house to share with us. Remember it???? A French inspired house, it was just beautiful and I really liked it. So pretty!

And, Julie also sent us photos of this house – with the lilac and rose accents – curtains and fabrics mixed with white slipcovers and seagrass. Love!!

And the bedroom with the gilt French settee.Since then, Julie Dodson has been really busy!! She’s been designing all over town and Texas and more, and last month I noticed she was featured in, not one, but two magazines!!! Wow!!!!
She was in “Interiors” AND was the cover story for the May issue of “Luxe!!!” I thought both houses showed how to design for the younger set today – with a mix of the new and old and using pretty colors. Photos for this cover story are by James Schroder:

A couple with a small child needed a larger home – and as luck would have it, they found it. A French styled two story with one story wings, the house was built in the late 1990s and did not need a thing done to it. At all. Except, the floor. The couple wanted to change the concrete floor to wood, and that was all. Oh, and paint. They wanted to repaint the house’s interior – trendy white. And that was it! The house was perfect as is. They hired Julie for the paint and floor.
Except, that once the house was painted trendy white, the hardware no longer looked good with the newly painted walls. They needed new hardware. Are you getting the drift? In the end, everything was updated. Even their furniture. It was all sold and new pieces were bought. Blame it on that dang white paint!
The living room shows the color scheme of the house – blue, coral, and lilac with accents of black. The rug is antique, yet it lends a contemporary accent as does the ottoman and coffee table. The room is so chic, with a youthful vibe perfect for the couple.
Across from the sofa are two classic Klismos chairs mixed with contemporary art and antique accessories. I love the lilacs mixed with the coral. So beautiful! It’s dressy with antique accents, perfect for a living room, but it doesn’t have a “hands-off” vibe.
In the entry hall, Dodson again mixes antique stools with a contemporary console. Gorgeous antique mirror.
Antique rug and console with classic chairs in the coral with blue silk curtains. The gold lamps lend the trendy vibe while the wall treatment is a bit of a folly. The room is young and fun, not stuffy and old. Yet, it retains an air of sophistication.

The family room is very colorful, drenched in shades of coral, pumpkin, and rose. The white on the sofa and curtains serves as an accent.
Contemporary bar stools next to classic slipped bench. The trendy light fixtures mixes with the antique china cabinet painted in shades of faded blue.
The library at the front of the house introduces the color scheme of blue and lilac and coral. The wall color is just luscious.
The bedroom has a white base with colorful pink accents. I love the window treatment with the cornice board and its trim.

And, Julie was gracious enough to share this house with us. What really struck me first is how organic this facade is. It is one with the environment. The house is located in Memorial, a very wooded neighborhood, and it looks as if it BELONGS here, doesn’t it? The couple loved the street and waited for the opportunity to buy a lot on it. When they finally bought it, they then hired renowned architectRobert Dame to build their dream house, hoping to make it look as if the house was built a long time ago.
The lot is on a quiet, private road and they wanted the house to have a bit of an Aspen, rustic retreat feel to it. They have three teenaged daughters and dogs, and they love to cook and entertain. The house is large enough for the family to have lots of room to spread out, yet it has a cozy, welcoming look.

The entry has a gorgeous antique chandelier with a French settee.
The living room is to the left of the foyer with a raised ceiling and dark stained beams. The rug and ottoman add a touch of contemporary accents to the room.
The fireplace is an antique from Chateau Domingue and it is a showstopper. Gorgeous. The floors are beautiful wide planked French oak.

Through an arch is the central hall of the house. I love how the French chairs and the curtains are the same shade of gray.
The main hall, with the arched ceiling has contemporary lanterns, another exciting accent. Sheer curtains at the stained French doors. I love the way Julie decorated the hall with matching antique consoles.
The mantel is from Chateau Domingue. The paper is Gracie – beautiful!!! But the stunner is the chandelier.

And the wine cellar is through steel doors, another surprise, that ties in with the chandelier.
I love the family room with the antique day bed. The sofa is John Saladino! Yes!! Another gorgeous mantel, antique from Chateau Dominque. Matching skirted tables and mirrors. And I love the pop of lime green on the pillow.

The porch is an outdoor room, furnished more permanently than the typical wicker look. The stone work is gorgeous!!! Notice the brick ceiling. And the view so pretty.

And this must be the favorite daughter! Just kidding. But she definitely has a darling room – two story! Leslie of Segreto Finishes designed the stencil on the stairs.

And – still being painted – Leslie showed the large monogrammed she painted on the floor of the loft area in the bedroom!
On the first floor, the master has wood floors and a quiet palette. The large screen came from the John Saladino Showroom – the other half faces it on the opposite wall (unseen.)
The bathroom – love the horn! And notice the mirrored door at the very left. Love that!!I loved showing these two houses that Julie Dodson designed, because I think they are both great examples of how to mix in antiques with modern pieces and have it all work and look great!!!
